Greek Mythology is full of Fantasy. Mystical gods and goddesses, imaginative creatures, and stories that lead the mind to run wild with stories of war heroes, great love and lovers, and of course, a story of the creation.
When a person first hears Greek Mythology, the first thing that comes to mind are the great Greek gods. In Greek Mythology there are 44 gods and goddesses. Now these gods are divided into sub-categories: the Olympian gods, the Titans, and the Lessor gods. The Titans were also known as the elder gods, ruled the earth before the Olympians overthrew them. The ruler of the Titans was Cronus who was de-throned by his own son Zues(ruler of the Olympians). Most of the Titans fought with Cronus against Zues and were punished by being banished to Tartarus. During their rule the Titans were associated with the various planets. There are 18 Titan gods. (Gaea, Uranus, Cronus, Rhea, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis, Iapetus, Coeus, Crius, Phoebe, Thea, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, and Metis.)
The Olympian are a group of 12 gods who ruled after the overthrow of the Titans. All the Olympians are related in some way. There are named after their dwelling place Mount Olympus. Olympian gods: Zues, Poseidon,Hades, Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, and Hephaestus.
The Lessor gods never really ruled the Greeks. When you hear of the lessor gods you are talking about a god under one of the ruling gods. There are 14 Lessor gods: Demeter, Persephone, Dionysus, Eros, Hebe, Eris, Helios, Thanatos, Pan, Nemesis, The Graces, The Muses, The Erinnyes, and The Fates.
